Waterloo Court, Didsbury – fire compartmentation surveys in a bougie Manchester suburb

Waterloo Court, a part of West Didsbury

West Didsbury, East Didsbury and Didsbury Village – a triad that appeals to many in Manchester, with each place having a distinct character.

It’s often said too, that by appending the noun “village” to any old place, outsiders and incomers will immediately think more favourably and probably buy or rent there.

Didsbury, in all three guises, doesn’t really have to try with compass points or village nomenclature. It’s always had a high social cachet, with easy access to Manchester city centre and the leafy towns of Cheshire further south.

The history of Didsbury

In case you were wondering, settlement in Didsbury began in the 13th century, but its real prominence arrived during the Industrial Revolution, when factory owners, mill magnates and the like, chose it as home away from the dirty canals, railways, workhouses and factories of Manchester.

Ancoats – an industrial slum

The poor lived and worked in Ancoats, ironically now one of the poshest places in Manchester, resided in slum quarters around Angel Meadow (again now salubrious and labelled The Green Quarter) but Didsbury then and now commanded premium prices, desirability because, to be perfectly vanilla, it’s so damned nice.

Burton Road, West Didsbury

Burton Road forms the epicentre of West Didsbury, lined with independent businesses from its Metrolink stop, that is probably, technically, Withington. The bulking and thriving Metropolitan pub sits to the left, and it does feel like you could be on Kensington High Street.

To the right, where most businesses lodge, are wine bars, restaurants, independent shops and cafes, and it is a welcoming and diverse enclave, with rental and sale prices exceeding that of Manchester central, with perhaps only Chorlton (or Chorlton-Cum-Hardy) top trumping it. That place has Chorlton Green, a beautiful part of Manchester, with eye-watering prices for the supposedly grim north.

Lapwing Lane and Waterloo Court

Off Burton Road, at the traffic lights, as you head south through West Didsbury, to the left sits Lapwing Lane, with a few more swanky businesses and the more modest 1960s apartment block, called Waterloo Court.

Here, Block Compliance Ltd carried out fire compartmentation surveys that you can read more about by clicking this link. This is one of our primary services and it was lovely for our team to work in such a splendid suburb of south Manchester.

This work follows on from a diverse Manchester portfolio of passive fire protection including:

  1. Jewel House, Northern Quarter
  2. Lawrence House, Hulme
  3. The Cotton Mill, city centre
  4. Lexington 42 on Sackville Street
  5. River Street Tower, student accommodation in the city centre
  6. Velvet House, another off Sackville Street
  7. Brontë and Madison Court, Salford (we know, we know, that Salford is a separate city to Manchester)

What these listed case studies emphatically show is that Block Compliance Ltd are trusted partners, and often the first port of call, for developers and block management teams in Manchester and beyond those M postcodes.

We are a team of experienced and reliable passive fire protection experts who work closely with all fire and building regulations, so that your residents, tenants, workers and students can sleep easy, knowing that passive fire safety is all covered with us.

National coverage from Block Compliance Ltd

Of course, we work elsewhere and, as mentioned before, when we can drag our roving Manc marketeer, Stuart, away from his beloved city, we guarantee that in June and beyond, he will be showcasing work in the east and West Midlands, as well as London.

We hope too that by producing quirky posts and updates on our growing LinkedIn and Meta channels, that you can see we don’t just talk the talk – we walk it (and Stuart does too with his notes and border collie).

The call to action?

Oh go on then.

If you’d like a proposal from Richard Dempsey, our MD, or Priya Bharath-Meades, our Head of Operations, they are both active on LinkedIn or you can send a general enquiry to: info@block-compliance.net and hopefully you will become the subject of a blog, reels and shots in future website and social media updates.
