Hudson Quarter, York – a fine complex in a beautiful city

York, so good the Americans named their famous sibling after it.

It’s a city steeped in history – from Viking to Roman to Medieval settlement – on the banks of the rivers Ouse and Foss, and is one of the most attractive and visited places in the UK. It is of course famous for Clifford Tower, its vast city walls, York Minster, the Shambles, railways and much more.

And rightly so.

York is beautiful from every angle

The centrally-located railway station hints at the splendour to come with its panelled roof and distinctive curved platforms greeting commuters and visitors.

Literally across the road from here sits the modern Hudson Quarter, alongside George Stephenson House. The Hudson Quarter is one of four passive fire protection projects we’re highlighting in York; the others being: Westgate Apartments, The Residence up “Bishy Road” and St Leonard’s House.

More on those 3 though in other blogs as the focus here is on the Hudson Quarter

Hudson Quarter in York is a modern mixed-use development located just outside the city walls, directly opposite York Railway Station. Developed by Palace Capital and completed in 2021 following a £35 million investment, the scheme replaced the former 1960s Hudson House, which once stood on the site of York’s original railway terminus. The project comprises 127 apartments across three residential blocks: Waverley, Victoria, and Kings; as well as around 40,000 square feet of Grade A office space.

Designed by Fuse Studios in partnership with Caddick Construction

Designed by Fuse Studios in partnership with Caddick Construction, the architecture blends contemporary design with York’s historic character. The buildings are closely spaced and carefully angled to reflect the city’s traditional rooflines, gradually stepping down in height towards the nearby City Walls. A landscaped central courtyard adds a sense of community, complete with greenery, a gazebo with utilities, and secure access for residents.

Sustainable and well connected

Hudson Quarter also demonstrates a strong focus on sustainability and connectivity. The office component is the first speculative development of its kind within the city walls in decades and has achieved BREEAM Excellent and WiredScore Platinum certifications. A new pedestrian route was introduced to improve access between York Station and the Micklegate area, integrating the site into the surrounding urban landscape.

The development has also received several awards, including the Gamechanger Award at the Variety Yorkshire Property Awards and Best Residential Development at the Yorkshire Insider Property Awards, and it was shortlisted for a national placemaking award.
