Passive fire protection at the wonderful 19 Wellington Street Leeds

19 Wellington Street Leeds,  despite the name, is rather grand – the street is probably a reference to the Duke (no, not John Wayne) rather than the rubber galoshes, but, as we stated, its grandeur as a street and building are undeniable.

As is its location.

19 Wellington Street Leeds

City centre living

Slap bang in Leeds city centre, the railway station is literally 100 feet away – though the internal walk to the ticket barriers is longer and, like platforms 13 and 14 at Manchester Piccadilly, platform 16A, B or C, is the stuff of folklore.

Anyway enough about its name and rail proximity, let’s talk about the building and our work there.

Victorian woollen mill

19 Wellington Street Leeds is a Grade 2 listed Victorian woollen mill, opening in 1859, designed by George Corson for John Sykes & Son. Its style is Venetian Gothic and is a beauty of a building. It mimics many other Leeds architecture, comprised of mixed colour arches and bricks with slate roof. It is a prestigious building with apartments ranging from studios to a unique 3 bedroom, 3 en-suite penthouse that last sold in 2021 for £650,000.

Beautiful apartments

Residential conversion ended in 2004 and rentals and apartments for sale are snapped up quickly it seems.

The apartments are beautiful inside too, as well as from the outside.

Here, appropriately given the Leeds shopping centre name, Block Compliance Ltd were instructed to complete the trinity of:

  1. Fire door surveys
  2. Fire compartmentation surveys
  3. Building Safety Case Reports

At the other end of Leeds, we completed similar at the equally sumptuous Crispin Lofts.  You can read that case study here.

Leeds is rising

Leeds, along with other major cities like Manchester, Liverpool and London, has seen huge regeneration and rising demand for urban living.

Cities are no longer places to visit or commute to; they are often the first choice of many people as they offer fantastic transport, superb cultural facilities, and expansive restaurant and culinary experiences.

Leeds is seeing focused growth around the burgeoning Docks on brownland, as in Candle House, but as 19 Wellington Street and Crispin Lofts prove with the high demand, period city centre living will always carry a certain cachet.
