The second of four case studies from the wonderful town of Ilkley, Parish Ghyll Court is located above the settlement on Parish Ghyll Road. It’s where the Block Compliance team conducted full fire door surveys.
The name: Ghyll
The word “ghyll” itself harks back to Old Norse, a reminder that the Vikings once roamed these parts. It’s a common name for a stream in the north of England too, and many readers may be familiar with Dungeon Ghyll, with dungeon here meaning a ravine. That Ghyll is in the Langdale range, close to Pavey Ark and its infamous Grade 1 scramble called “Jack’s Rake”.
Though Parish Ghyll Road is steep, it is no Dungeon Ghyll, with Parish Ghyll Court providing a good resting point up to another Block Compliance favourite – Rombold Grange. No exact date for construction can be found but it is probably older than Listers Court (1992) as its style suggests the 1980s.
It is squatter than Listers Court with just 3 storeys sitting above ground floor garages, facing uphill towards Ilkley Moor.

Fire door surveys are one of our primary passive fire specialisms at Block Compliance Ltd.
Here’s a clear, professional summary about fire door surveys and the law:
Fire door surveys and the law
Fire doors are a crucial element of a building’s passive fire protection system. Their primary function is to slow or prevent the spread of fire and smoke, giving occupants time to evacuate safely. Because of their life-saving role, the law places a clear responsibility on building owners, managers, and landlords to ensure fire doors are correctly installed, maintained, and regularly inspected.
In the UK, fire door requirements are primarily governed by:
- The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – applies to non-domestic premises and sets out the responsibility for risk assessments and maintaining fire safety measures, including fire doors.
- Building Regulations Approved Document B – covers new and refurbished buildings, specifying fire resistance ratings, door construction, and installation standards.
- BS 9999 and BS 8214 – British Standards provide detailed guidance on the inspection, maintenance, and replacement of fire doors.
Fire door surveys are a legal and practical requirement in Ilkley and elsewhere
Surveys involve:
- Checking that doors close correctly and are not obstructed
- Verifying seals, hinges, intumescent strips, and signage
- Identifying damage or wear that may compromise performance
Failure to maintain compliant fire doors can have serious legal consequences.
