All Six House appeal: Liverpool living with a twist on Derby Square

Unusual name in an iconic location: All Six House, Liverpool.

Here, Block Compliance Ltd were contracted for both fire door and fire compartmentation surveys.

First the location

Head down to Strand Street, or The Strand, from Liverpool to One Park West (another building we carried out passive fire protection services at), turn right towards the Three Graces and right again, up Red Cross Street, to reach Derby Square and the Queen Victoria Monument.

All Six House Liverpool

Here, sits All Six House, off James Street that becomes Lord Street in Liverpool city centre

The block itself is residential apartments. It was formerly known as Graeme House, offices for HMRC, taking its new name in 2021 when it was converted and upgraded for tenants and owners alike. Its 5 storeys of apartments are desirable and plush inside and little is known of its construction date – presumably late 1980s or early 1990s.

The Queen Victoria Monument

More is known, though, about the grandly ornate sculptured monument in front of All Six House. Liverpool’s Queen Victoria Monument is part royal tribute, part open-air sculpture gallery.

Completed in 1906 on the site of the old castle, it wraps Queen Victoria in a grand Portland stone pavilion guarded by bronze allegories of Justice, Wisdom, Charity, and Peace. Industry, Commerce, Agriculture, and Education hustle around her base, while a trumpeting angel of Fame shouts her legacy skyward.

The Queen Victoria Monument Liverpool

Surviving wartime bombs and countless pigeons, it’s as much a local meeting spot as a monument. Think of it as Liverpool’s stone-and-bronze selfie frame, forever reminding the city of its imperial swagger.

Swagger aplenty

Liverpool has plenty of architectural swagger elsewhere too – we have published a case study already on Wood Street, a former rope warehouse (we think) dating to Victorian times – where we completed the same dual services of fire compartmentation and fire door surveys, about 1km away. Wood Street runs parallel to the iconic Bold Street and is close to Chinatown, Liverpool.

The Royal Liver Building

Liverpool’s skyline is a patchwork of history, commerce, and character, stitched together with buildings that refuse to be ignored. Take the Royal Liver Building, for instance, close to All Six House, a waterfront giant crowned with mythical Liver Birds that supposedly flap their wings if a true Scouser walks by.

Completed in 1911, it was one of the first buildings in the world to use reinforced concrete, a fact engineers love almost as much as tourists love the clock faces that outsize Big Ben.

The Three Graces

Not far away, the Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building complete the famous “Three Graces.” They ooze Edwardian grandeur, each telling a story of maritime wealth and international swagger. Stroll a little further and you’ll bump into the Philharmonic Dining Rooms, a pub so ornate it has Grade I listed status. Even the gents’ toilets are worth a guided tour; a rare case of urinals being part of architectural heritage.

Dual cathedrals

Then there’s the Metropolitan Cathedral, affectionately dubbed “Paddy’s Wigwam,” a futuristic crown of concrete and stained glass that looks like it could beam Scousers into space. Its neighbour in spiritual scale is the mighty Anglican Cathedral, gothic colossus so vast it can swallow whole city blocks, yet still manages to host art shows, light trails, and even the odd abseil.

These icons prove that in Liverpool, buildings aren’t just bricks and mortar, they’re personalities, like its locals, standing tall, cheeky, and utterly unforgettable.

Fire safety matters

In Liverpool’s historic and modern buildings alike, safety is as important as style. That’s why fire door surveys and fire compartmentation surveys are essential – ensuring every corridor, apartment, and workspace is protected against the spread of fire and smoke.
